How To Get A Refund From Venmo

Need help getting the Venmo refund you’re owed? You may have legal options

Venmo is a pretty cool money sharing software that ranks right up there with Paypal. It allows you to send and receive money from friends, and also to pay people directly from the website. However, sometimes you might send a payment to the wrong person, or might need to request your money back.

This can be a long process, and difficult to understand if you are a first timer to Venmo. However, this article is going to help you get your money back, all by showing you a few simple steps and walking you away from the various pitfalls that might appear in your journey to getting your refund.

1

Contact the Merchant and then Venmo

Whether you accidentally sent too much money to a friend, or bought a purchase with your Venmo account that wasn’t at all what you expected, you will need to contact the merchant you sent the money too. Typically, you will be able to talk to the merchant and have then send the money back to you, especially if that merchant is a friend or colleague.

But if it is a stranger on the internet then you might have a problem, as they typically aren’t as responsive. If you’ve bought a product from them and want to file a dispute, then you might find that they either cut off all communication, or you just can’t come to an agreement.

If the communication with the seller isn’t going well, then you will need to reach out to Venmo’s customer support team and provide the following pieces of information to them. First, tell them the reason that you are asking for a refund, the transaction amount that you sent and the date that you sent it, the name of the seller, and any information about the issue that you have.

Venmo might ask for more documentation and proof as the case goes on, and you will need to provide this information on time to make sure it is documented. This doesn’t mean that you will get a refund, but it does mean that Venmo will be able to help you out and mediate the dispute.

You can contact the Venmo customer support via phone and email, and for either case you will need to open a dispute with the seller within 180 days of the date that you purchased an item or sent a transaction. Then after a few business days a Venmo customer support representative will get back to you and help mediate things.

2

Understand the Refund Policy

Venmo has a refund policy that lists several different snenarios where you can get a refund, and some of these scenarios are quite common. For example, if you sent a payment by mistake,or if you send an unathorized payment. Additionally, if the transaction is denied or reversed, or if the payment is used for something that is against the website’s terms of service, then you can receive a full refund.

If you are purchasing a product from a business profile on Venmo and the transaction gets sent back, then you are also eleglable to receive a refund.

With Venmo, it is an instant money service, which means that once you click send on the transaction, you can’t cancel it. The funds are out of your hands and available to the recipient right away, and a refund relies on the recipient sending you that money back.

But Venmo can’t refund a payment back to you until the recipient of the payment gives their permission to send the money back. The ball is almost always in the buyer’s court, so make sure you understand what you are purchasing and ask any necessary questions beforehand. You don’t want to send the money first and ask questions later!

3

Receive Your Refund

Once the seller has agreed to send you the money back, then you will need to wait for the refund to arrive. This typically takes anywhere from one to five business days, although it can take longer depending on the business or seller that you are receiving the refund from. You’ll be able to see where all the money goes under the “account statement” section of your Venmo account website.

If you paid for the product with a Venmo debit card, then the refund will be returned to your Venmo balance. Otherwise your funds will go to your bank account, and that information will clearly be marked on your account statement.

It might take a while for the funds to be processed, so be patient and know that they are coming. Once you have the money refunded, then you can rest easy and be done with it.

Getting Your Money Back From Venmo

While Venmo doesn’t officially have a ‘undo payment’ or ‘take back’ option yet to ward off mistaken payments or misclicks, their are still a few ways to get your money back if you need to receive a refund. One of the best ways to get your money back quickly is to be kind and patient with the seller, becuase they are the ones that hold the power once you send the transaction.

If you can be kind to the seller then they might be empathetic and send you the money back, without needing to get the Venmo customer services involved. Even with the customer service on your side, that doesn’t guarantee a refund, and all they can really do is pressure the seller.

So if you are using Venmo, always make sure to check and double check who you are sending money too, and how much you are sending. That way you can avoid the need for the hassle in the first place.

While getting a refund from Venmo can be tough, by no means is it impossible, so don’t be afraid to correct the mistake. Hopefully with those few steps, you’ll be able to get your money back, and then continue using Venmo without making that mistake again!
